Today we started by practicing another inference activity.  I was surprised by how many of you caught on so quickly to the "It says... I say... and so..." structuring.  There were still a few that were having a tough time.  No need to fret!  We will continue to practice inferences for the majority of the school year.

Once we were finished with our inference activity, I gave you the remainder of the hour to read The Outsiders.  Chapter 2 was to be completed by the end of the hour!

If you did not finish in class, I asked that you checked out a book.  I hope everyone comes to class with chapter two finished for Tuesday.

MONDAY IS THE FIELD TRIP!  I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW WELL YOU DO!

Today in class we practiced another inference activity.  The majority of the class seemed to do well finding the answer, but struggled a bit figuring out how to phrase the answer.  Not a problem!  We will continue to practice this throughout the remainder of the school year.

Once we were finished with our inference activity, I read aloud from The Outsiders for the remainder of the hour.  Thank you to those of you that were paying attention while I read aloud.

Today we did our first inference activity.  I showed you a picture of the comic and asked you, "Why is the turkey visiting the psychiatrist?"  We practiced using the phrase, "It says_____, I say ______, and so _______."  I was very impressed with how well you all did!

When we were finished I had you complete your anticipation guide for The Outsiders.  We tallied up the amounts of "yes" and "no" for each category.  To wrap up this activity I asked you to complete the sentence below.

I predict this book will be about __(Inference)__ because__(Textual evidence/Prior knowledge)__.

We briefly talked about how making predictions is a type of inference.  I asked you to support your prediction with evidence from either the anticipation guide or the article, or both!

To round out the hour I either gave you independent reading time to begin the story or read aloud to you.

Today in class we took notes on inferences in our notebooks/on our notes sheet.  We practiced answering a few different inference questions.  You guys did great!  I was surprised by how much you already knew.

After working on our inferences I asked that you read and annotate an interview with the author of our next novel.  If you did not finish this in class it is homework.

If you want to play the inference game MS. Erickson was referencing in class, the link is below.

Today we worked on filling in our Inferences and Evidence Unit Organizer!

We started out by reading "I Want My Hat Back".  After we finished I asked you to answer the following question.  The steps we went through to get to our answer were the steps we will use throughout our unit to make inferences.

We talked about what we will be doing over the next few weeks.  If you were absent or have already managed to lose your sheet please click the images below and copy them onto a new sheet.  Blank ones can be found on the counter by the windows in my room.

Tomorrow, we will be working more on identifying what inferences are.  We will also get a little background information on the S.E. Hinton, the author of our next novel The Outsiders.

Today in class we started by reviewing mood and tone.  We practiced with some examples, took
some notes in our notes section, and then applied our new knowledge to our Malala article.  If you were absent or didn't finish the notes, please copy the slides in the picture below.  Once we were finished with our questions, I asked you to turn your packets in.  You guys did a great job today!

This was our last activity with Malala.  I know many of you were sad to see her go.  The next piece of writing we will read is just as great, though!

Today in class we reviewed what annotation and THIEVES are.  We talked about the importance of previewing before reading and annotating during reading.

We spent the majority of the hour working on some discussion questions.  We FINALLY were able to work in our notebooks.  I asked you to answer three different questions in complete sentences with some textual evidence as support.  The questions are listed in the image to the left.

For the third question I let you chat with a partner before sharing with the class. You guys are doing really well so far working in pairs.

To wrap up the class period we did a quick mini lesson on mood and tone.  Everyone participated in a fun activity where we tried saying a phrase in different tones.  Thank you to those of you who volunteered to share your example with the class.

Before heading out the door I had you complete a short exit slip for understanding.  After reading through them it seems like you've all got the hang of mood and tone.  I am anxious to apply this new knowledge to our Malala article tomorrow.

PLEASE DON'T FORGET YOUR PERMISSION SLIPS AND A INDEPENDENT READING BOOK TOMORROW!

I hope tomorrow more students are prepared and willing to participate.  Thank you to those of you that followed the directions and completed your homework for class.

We will be working in the "Reader's Notebook" section of our notebooks tomorrow so make sure you have it for class tomorrow.

Our First Monday

S+ English

Today in class we had a mini lesson on realistic fiction.  We filled in our charts something like the one below.  If you were absent, make sure you get a chart from the window counter and fill your's in on your own time.  Make sure to have this yellow sheet every day for class since we will be adding to it daily.

We also spent some time talking about good vs bad presentations.  I want you all to be clear on the difference since you will be presenting tomorrow.

We learned about the importance of making connections.  Making connections helps us deepen our understanding, and bring meaning to whatever we are reading and hearing.  The specific types of connections we will be discussing are; text to self, text to text and text to world.

I had you answer and record some information on a scratch sheet of paper, and turn it in to me.  I will be looking over these tonight and giving them back to you before presentations tomorrow.

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET YOUR PRESENTATION STUFF!

You will present whatever you have when your name is called.  The only exception is if you have been absent from school.

Today in class we finished going over your "What's in the bag?" presentation packet.  I gave you half of the class period to finish working on your outlines.  Please make sure to have these finished for class on Monday.

Here is the slide I showed for how to fill in your outline.  Remember, you don't HAVE to use these sentence starters, but you should make sure to speak in complete sentences when you present.

Today in class we checked out books from the Media Center.  When we returned, I passed out your green "What's in the bag?" packets.  After briefly going through the packet I showed you my example presentation (if you were absent, or would like a refresher, there will be a video posted this weekend of my example).

Once my presentation was finished, you had some work time to complete steps one and two.  Please, make sure have at least two brainstormed answers for each category you chose, for class tomorrow.

This is a photo of my brainstorm page.

Welcome!

S+ English 7 and English 7

Congratulations on surviving your first day of Junior High!

Today in class, we went over some of my rules and procedures.  You also read some letters from my past students.  I hope you feel like you have an idea of what it's like to be a student in my classroom.

We also filled in our blue bingo board sheets.

Don't forget to have those finished for class tomorrow so we can play.

Some of you added your favorite books to our class collection and some of you did not.  Don't worry!  If we didn't get to it today we will do it tomorrow.

I hope your first day wasn't too stressful.  I know how moving to a new school can be quite a change.
